Humble beginnings

The club originated during World War II, when, after parades some Home Guard members went to the Harrows Inn for a drink; with other commitments many members couldn’t make it and there was usually little time to spare so the members applied successfully for a licence to have a small bar in the Old Mill on Mill Lane which was then used as the Home Guard headquarters.   When the Home Guard was stood down there were 70 members who, wanting to keep the old spirit alive, each contributed to opening a club on the present site on 9 September 1947 using surplus Ministry of Works “standard hutting”.   Major Brown who commanded A company was the first President.   The club was rebuilt in 1971 at a cost of £ 45,000.

The Club Today

The club has undergone many changes since 1971.   The last major refurbishment of the members bar was completed in February 2020. The function room refurbishment was completed in February 2024.
